5 WAYS I CALM MY ANXIOUS MIND

Thursday, April 14, 2016

This is a more personal post than I usually put on here. I don't talk about my anxiety that often and I keep it kind of on the down low but, I have been feeling a bit anxious these past few weeks and I feel like this is a good time to write this post. Once I'm feeling anxious it can be pretty hard to get myself back to normal (I hate the word "normal" but I really can't think of another word to use right now) but there are a few things that help me feeling more calm and 10x better even if its just for a little while.

Exercise

When I'm feeling anxious it takes a lot of effort  to get me out of my bed, even more effort to get me out of the house. But a solid 30 minute run puts me on a high. The first 5 minutes of the run is pure torture but after that I feel so great and continues to feel great for the rest of the day. I know exercise isn't like a perfect solution and I definitely need to be more consistent with it but 9/10 times it puts me in a great mood.

Unplug

Getting away from screens helps me decompress. You know the internet. It can be mind-numbing. I love to do activities that exercise the mind, like puzzles, sudoku, or coloring.

Eat Healthy

Basically all I want to do when I'm anxious is eat all the junk food. I mean all the cookies and ice cream in the world but no matter how enjoyable it is in the moment I guarantee you will feel like shit a few minutes later. I will usually have a bowl of fruit to please my sweet-tooth and eating healthy cuts down the feeling shitty part.

No Alcohol

I know FOMO is real but if you feel anxious a night of drinking will just make you feel worse in the end. You might not feel anxious in the moment but the next day will be horrible.  Hanging at home and decompressing will be a much better option in the long run. Also, along the same line limit caffeine intake. I have an addiction to coffee, its bad, but when I get anxious I try not to drink coffee that day.

Going for a long drive

This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but driving around with the windows down and playing some jams puts me in a good mood. It allows me to get out of the house and some fresh air while still being in a comfortable place and not really in public, because I especially don't want to be in public when I'm feeling anxious.

I hope this post was at least a little helpful for some people! What do you do to calm yourself when you're feeling anxious?

See you soon!

  1. Alcohol is definitely something I try to avoid! After having a few drinks I'm fine for an hour or so but then massive anxiety hits and I feel like I have to get back home to my safe place, it's horrible. Eating healthy and slowly transitioning to a plant-based diet has also helped me a ton when it comes to managing my anxiety :)
