A PALE GIRL'S GUIDE TO SUMMER SUN

Thursday, June 22, 2017

Summer is finally upon us! This is when everyone cheers in delight while I go sulk off in a dark corner. Literally. Yes, I am that girl on the beach wearing a hat, sunglasses, sweatshirt and a towel over her legs huddled under an umbrella so no ray of sunshine touches me. No, I am not exaggerating, I have actually done that on multiple occasions. Unless a camera comes out then I pretend I'm soaking up the sun because...INSTA!

In my 23 years of life (and getting sun poisoning at least 4-6 times) I've gotten pretty great at avoiding the sun and I thought I would share my tips with you today.

STAY INDOORS

I know this might be hard for most people in the summer (once again I am not one of those people) but when the sun is at it's peak you should stay inside or at least in the shade. And if you do want to go outside the best times to do so are in the morning before noon and in the late afternoon when the sun isn't high in the sky. The sun is the most powerful around noon to 3pm so those are the prime times to stay inside.

COVER UP

I always like to carry a light sweater or long sleeve tee with me in the summertime so when I start to feel the sun's heat I can cover up my exposed skin. Even though I may get a little hot and uncomfortable putting on layers is the best way to protect your skin from the rays.

TIP: wear lighter colors to stay cooler because light reflects white and absorbs black #SCIENCE

FIND THE PERFECT SUNSCREEN

I used to hate wearing sunscreen when I was little, which is probably why I got a good amount of burns, because all the sunscreens I tried made me feel like a gross oil slick. But, overtime I've found sunscreens that work for me. My favorite brand is Coola. They make a great mineral sunscreen for your face that is my holy grail! I'm not a fan of their body sunscreen because it is a spray and I don't think sprays apply evenly. My go to for my body is SunBum!

FOCUS ON PROBLEM AREAS

I always try to reapply generously throughout the day to my "peaks", meaning the cheekbones, forehead, shoulders, chest, and ears (don't forget the ears!).

Those are my top tips for pale girls in the summer! If you have any other tips I should know let me know in the comments!

See you soon!
x Emily
